Smit Lamnalco upgrades communications across fleet
Smit Lamnalco operates a fleet of around 225 vessels, including terminal tugs

Smit Lamnalco is installing VSAT on a fleet of offshore support vessels and tugs. It has contracted KVH Industries to install its TracPhone V3-IP satellite communications antenna system and mini-VSAT Broadband on up to 100 vessels over the next few years.

Initially, VSAT has been deployed on 20 vessels. This followed successful field trials with the equipment and service on some vessels.

KVH is also installing its integrated CommBox modem and network management unit, virtual private networks and voice over IP services. It will be supported by the KVH OneCare support programme and the myKVH portal. This provides vessel location, connectivity details, vessel tracking, and control of onboard data usage.

Smit Lamnalco provides harbour towage and supports coastal and offshore terminals for the oil and gas industry and mining sector worldwide. It operates a fleet of around 225 vessels with more than 3,000 staff. The fleet consists of:

  • Terminal tugs
  • Harbour tugs
  • Offshore support vessels
  • Anchor handlers
  • Utility craft
  • Crew boats
